Hello,

What are the most popular, or recommended process modelling tools
(specifically software process & business process) at present -
particularly Open Source process modeling tools.

I understand the UML has some capacity to model or represent a process
- but I am aiming for a
tool more specialized in process modeling per se -

Also I'm NOT refering to process management tools - such as project
managment tools or tools with gantt charts - .

I would appreciate your recommendations and responses. Thanks.

Data.

WinA&D at www.excelsoftware.com is a solid process modeling tool that
has been around for 10+ years and is used throughout the defense
industry and at industrial companies like GM, IBM, etc.

I researched this about 10 years ago, looking at ways to represent
business process flows, process descriptions, player interactions,
etc. The tools I found then were probably of little use to you now.

However, one thing that really surprised me was that the software
tools industry had very little of value. Most of the sophisticated
tools came out of the business management, ERP, information
modelling and similar fields and were almost totally unrelated to
software engineering tools. My guess is that this hasn't changed
much, because the domains are very different, even though they don't
seem to be on first look.

Note that there *were* quite sophisticated software/systems
development tools then, and I knew quite a bit about what they
provided. I looked there first.

So I guess what I'm suggesting is that you may be asking in the
wrong place.
