Hello ,

After much thinking , I can now sum up all the trouble I've been meeting in
my current work and ask you for some advice

It'll be a little bit long but if you can keep focus until the end , it'll
be fun & scary @ the same time ...

First , I just get a job as an oracle DBA where i have to manage a pool of
software
engineer for the database part .

Even if I know my sql & oracle (the database which I'm working with) , I've
some hard time to adjust to the norm of my company which mean ... TOTAL
CHAOS =
- no organization
- no specific pattern for developpement
- SQL that are rapidly increasing with each new developpement and which I
have to handle manually (tracing who did what and what part of the 3 tier
softwre )
- No ER design or UML design of the database part (SIC!) .

As you can imagine , it is a total mess and more of it , i have know no idea
how to clean the mess but I came up with a few solution .

1) To trace the developpement (C++ , PowerBuilder ) , we have ClearCase &
Clear Quest . For reason of disk space I'm not allowed to use Clear Case as
a mean of tracing the SQL developpement (a database of a hundred Mo is much
much more in plain text file) . What can I do to keep trace of the sql
developpment past , present & future only to know that it's increasing
fastly and to increase the hardship , the sql code is always different ...
any kind of software , method will be welcome ...

2) So I came up with the idea of using Clearquest & it's system of
Integration Request . Only I've a hard time to keep trace because even if
the developper is using clearquest , one Integration Request number is ok .
But with 20 , it's more difficult .... What can I do to keep trace of the
sql developpment past , present & future only to know that it's increasing
fastly ... same question than 1)

3) I used a little bit of PowerDesigner in order to reverse engineer the
Database but my company said that it's quite expensive (licence) and Visio
is quite bad for reverse ... Any software that can help ?

Thanks for reading , I know that it was quite long but the problem is long
so ...

Any advice will be welcome (fleeing my job is not a good one , & I'm not a
quitter)

BIG TIA ,
Andy

ps: For who ask why did I accept the job , the answer are challenge & $ .
