The main excuse that anglers use is that 'fish don't feel pain.' As a graduate in marine biology I can state categorically that fish do feel pain. A bullet can kill quickly but as few bullets ever kill instantly and cleanly I don't think you can rely upon that line of reasoning. Personally, I would rather die by bullet than by suffocation (I came close to drowning once and don't want to experience that again).
